Pembroke power station, Wales

Pembroke power station is owned by RWE npower which, in 2008, entered into a £800 million contract with turbine manufacturers Alstom. The station is a 2,000MW natural gas-fired power project that is being built on the site of the former oil-fired power station which was closed in 1997 and demolished in 2000.

It will be a CCGT-type power station that uses natural gas.  The gas will come from the liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal at Milford Haven and not directly from a gas field.  There will be five 400MW modules, each with a 288MW Alstom gas turbine, heat recovery steam generator and steam turbine. The construction will be the largest power station built in the UK since Drax was completed in 1986.

Carter Group is contracted by Somi Impianti to provide a heavy lift team, lift planning and lifting technology with appointed persons and crane supervisors to plan and control the lifting of various components including cooling water pumps, pipe racks, condenser shells, condenser necks, etc.

As well as the heavy lifting technology provided we are also supplying via Carter Training, a continuous training service to cover activities to National Plant Operators Registration Scheme (NPORS) criteria, the following:

  • Mobile crane operator
  • Slinger / signaller
  • Telescopic handler
  • Mobile elevating work platforms (boom and scissor)
  • Vehicle banksman

The works on this power station are ongoing. Carter Group is providing essential knowledge and expertise, vital for the continuity of the project.  The power station is expected to be open and fully operational by the end of 2012, providing enough power for 3 million homes.
