Boat recycling - Carters doing their bit for the environment

For several months now, Carter Plant Hire has been working with Marine & Boat Recycling Ltd in their mission to help rid south west coastal areas of abandoned and rotting boats.

This issue has even been recognised by Prince William and the Duchy of Cornwall as something that needs to be addressed and was recently featured in a short piece by the BBC.

The latest lift was an insurance recovery of a yacht abandoned at Instow in North Devon with a large hole in its side. Obviously, with its contents spilling out, this boat was classed as a hazard and potential pollution risk. Initially, Carter Plant Hire turned the boat upright, so that a protective cover could be fitted over the hole. Then the hull was supported and lifted onto a cradle on the flatbed of Carter Plant Hire's Volvo FM420.

The salvaged vessel was transported by Carter Plant Hire to Marine & Boat Recycling's base at Tavistock, where it will be broken up. Their 'Zero to Landfill' policy means that the entire yacht and its contents will be recycled or sold as parts.
