Lifting new beach huts - case study

Last week Carter Plant Hire was contracted by Mercury Construction on behalf of East Devon County Council to lift 12 new beach huts into position at Jacob's Ladder, a well-known beach at Sidmouth, Devon.

Using a spider crane to lift a hut into place. Twelve huts were lifted in all.

As anyone local will know, access to the beach at Jacob's Ladder is narrow and steep, so this was not a straightforward operation. As such, it took place over three days and a variety of vehicles and lifting equipment was needed to complete the task. We used a full-size lorry loader to lift each hut onto a smaller vehicle that could get down the steep slope to the hard standing, then a spider crane was used to lift each hut into place. A skilled and coordinated effort by all involved using specialist equipment to protect the timber huts.
